The assets of a plan less liabilities other than the actuarial present value of promised retirement benefits.

Assets minus liabilities, also known as ownership interest. It represents the shareholders' equity in the business.

Example:

•   Positive Net Assets: A company with £1 million in assets and £600,000 in liabilities has net assets of £400,000.

•   Negative Net Assets: A company with £500,000 in assets and £600,000 in liabilities has negative net assets of £100,000.

Real-Life Scenario:

A retailer has £2 million in total assets and £1.5 million in liabilities. The difference of £500,000 is the net assets, representing the equity held by its shareholders.
